You may keep your SIM in a basic phone and use WhatsApp on a smartphone. Or you may use an old phone over Wi-Fi after removing its SIM. Will SIM binding affect either arrangement? The direction requires the app to remain linked to the account’s active SIM in the device running it. Keeping the primary app in one phone and its registered SIM in another may therefore be affected. The app’s implementation instructions are still needed to establish when and how your account will change.
What is SIM binding?
The government has directed certain communication providers to link their services to the account’s SIM in the user’s device. A March 2026 parliamentary answer describes preventing misuse of telecom identifiers as the purpose. The original DoT explanation specified continuous linkage. This goes beyond verifying a number once during registration.
The 2025 release named services including WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. It should not be read as a statement that every messaging app is covered in the same way.
What is the deadline? Does it start in November?
An answer to Rajya Sabha question 4331, dated 2 April 2026, gives providers a 31 December 2026 compliance deadline. It also says web-session logout is based on risk analysis, without a fixed interval. Official Rajya Sabha answer.
The original directions were issued in November 2025. They do not establish a November 2026 switch-off date. The provider deadline also does not confirm that every user will see the change on 1 January 2027. We have not verified a common rollout date announced by all affected apps.
Does the six-hour logout claim still apply?
The original explanation specified logout within six hours. The later parliamentary answer says there is no fixed interval. On the basis of the official 2 April 2026 answer, the older six-hour requirement should not be presented as a continuing fixed rule.
What to check for your setup
Look for the following details in your app’s official instructions. This checklist does not confirm how enforcement will work.
Your setup: checklist
| Your setup | What to check before making changes |
|---|---|
| Registered SIM in a different phone | Whether your provider’s official instructions address this arrangement |
| A second phone used as a companion | Whether the instructions distinguish primary and linked devices |
| Dual-SIM or eSIM | Which number identifies the account and whether your setup has specific guidance |
| Frequent web access | Whether you can access the primary phone if authentication is requested |
| Overseas travel | Whether the associated SIM stays in the handset, plus the app’s and operator’s guidance |
The original DoT release says the direction does not affect roaming users when the associated SIM remains in the handset. Do not assume that this also clears other arrangements, such as replacing it with a local SIM abroad.
Five useful actions now
1. Check your registered phone number. Find the number in your account settings and check that you still control its SIM. Do not post screenshots showing the complete number.
2. Review linked devices. WhatsApp’s Help Center explains that you can select a linked device on your primary phone and log it out. On Android, the usual route is More options → Linked devices. Menu placement can differ across devices.
3. Check two-step verification and passkeys. Review the options available in your account. Meta’s account-security explanation describes these protections. Enabling them does not remove a SIM-binding requirement.
4. Read the instructions before changing your setup. A headline alone is no reason to uninstall the app, reset your phone or change your number.
5. Open the app yourself. If a message claims you must complete a “SIM-binding update,” check inside the app or through its official support rather than signing in through the message’s link.
Be careful with QR codes and linking requests
Meta warns that scammers can use QR codes or device-linking codes to connect their devices to your WhatsApp account. Do not share a code or scan a linking QR code at a stranger’s request, even if they call it “verification.” Meta’s warning.
What still needs an answer?
We still need verified instructions for companion phones, eSIM, temporary SIM removal and signing back in. The documents reviewed here do not establish that chats will be deleted or that you must buy a new phone. If you receive a prompt you do not understand, save its wording, hide personal details and ask the app’s official support before changing anything.
